I am wanting to make some rod holders for my boat out of PVC I assume...not to fish out of...just to stand the rods upright and keep them off the bottom of boat while headed out...like I said I have some ideas of my own on the best way to go about it...but sure there's better ideas out there and probably in use on some of your boats...any tips?

if you got to buy the stuff your better off to buy rod holders, but if you got the stuff and all you have is your time then go for it imo.

Why do u say that? I have the tools and experience not to cob it up...or are the store bought ones similar priced to materials? I figured I would save a pretty penny and they would be higher quality...maybe not?

My opinion after you buy a long section of PVC and the hardware you could get them economy rod holders from walmart maybe even cheaper. The PVC would be more heavy duty then the plastic but they seemed to do the trick and last. Luckeywades got two 4 rod holders and his has lasted.

In mythe oppinion if your just wanting something to keep your rods off of your deck I would build a holder yourself. We have looked into a few options for storing our rods as well, but we were unimpressed with the selection of rod holders that will fit cat rods. A 2 inch pvc pipe will work fine even for the largest rod butts, just attach it to a section of plywood and prop it up with your battery when your moving. This will allow you to move it around if you need to, or remove it if you need space. We use a similar rod holder set up to fish out of as well with circle hooks. We use a similar foot by 1 foot sheet of quarter inch ply wood and two pvc pipes running at angles away from each other. We just set a battery or bait bucket by it so a fish can't pull our rods over board.

hose clamps and pvc work wonders.........if you have an aluminum jon boat it should have ribs running up the gunwale.......cut pvc to size and clamp it to the rib and it isn't going anywhere........a cheap and easy solution I have done before.........I did this on my old 14'36" and it worked real good.......had 6 rod holders like this and 4 driftmasters off the transom........made a pretty good spread......

here's my old rig...........gonna hook up something similiar to my 1448 once i get around to it..........cheap and very effective.......if you secure the pvc down good you don't have to worry about them going anywhere........

I would just use the pvc pipe and mount it on a board or something with u bolts or something similar. Also I seen on line some where? A guy used pool noodles for the tops(1-2 ft up) to keep the rods from bouncing around allot. Think he used a board for the bottom with holes drilled in for the rod butts. He cut slits in the noodle for the rods and used a washer and screws to attach it just don't have the screws/bolts where your rods would be inserted
