I know a lot of guys have opinions on bottom composition in lakes...I have always concentrated on mud flats in the spring because of it warming faster...do you guys target other areas during other times of year and why? And how do ya feel about bottom composition in relation to rivers?

we typically target rocky bottoms in lakes were flatheads can blend in and ambush food, plus rocky gravely areas tend to hold smallmouth in rivers i care less about the bottom and more about the structure so we target structure first without worrying about bottom comp. when not fishing structure we focus on sand bars with deep water nearby again because the sandy bottoms seem to attract smallmouth

So do you think they hang out in gravel areas because they prefer that bottom composition or because they are chasing the small mouth?

I think where you find the bait you find the fish. I'm with Jordan 100% on this one. I target rocky or sandy areas. I truly believe you find the smallmouth you find the flatheads. Crayfish is a big part of a flatheads diet also. The smallies are also there for the crayfish. That's for river fish.
