A lot of hours devoted to waiting on bites were utilized discussing theories and tactics with fishing partners. We bounced all kind of ideas off of each other and many resulted in tactics and tackle I use today. There are probably more things that didn't work out than what did.
As some of you may know I study flathead 365 days a year and catch up on thesis/research papers in Winter after all my tackle is repaired and stowed. I test tendencies shown by research to see if it can help me catch more flathead.

Like I said before, I think a lot while fishing. Right now I am working on a theory involving flathead and thermoclines.
I really should quiz the biologists for their thoughts of flathead and big rainstorms also to get their opinions.

Do those lakes out east stratify in the summer robby? i would assume in depths over 20' ? Would you share your theory/ hypothesis with us.....

It is too late to make observations about the thermocline now.
Essentially my theory is that flathead must utilize shallower water during the heat of summer because the cooler deeper water contains such low concentrations of oxygen that fish cannot survive.
Baitfish do not utilize water below the thermocline and although all fish crave the more comfortable temperature, they also need oxygen.
High water temperature in itself does not deter flathead activity. High water temperature does inhibit oxygen being dissolved. If high water temps and no wind or current are available fish are stressed and become very lethargic. The larger the fish, the more stress by low O2.
So the good news is the flathead are easier to locate. The bad news is they may not actively feed until storms/rain cool and aerate water to make more favorable conditions.
You can confirm the fact that no fish are below the thermocline in July/August by observing your fishfinder in deep water. No fish will be marked in water below the thermocline. I often turn up sensitivity over deeper water to confirm the depth of the the thermocline. There is a distinct line I call the grayline. This is from the olden paper graph days when thermoclines showed up as a gray line. Then I make a mental note not to fish any deeper than the thermocline.
