In Ohio you have to be certified to run a motor of 10 horse power or greater, and for a long time there was a course that you had to take one weekend and pass an exit exam. This has since been changed. You can now take your boating exam online. It's 30 bucks and you only pay when you pass the final exam. You can fail the exams time and time again without any repercussion. I was planning on attending the course this year, but now i don't have to. Just figured I'd share, but I imagine most of you old folks are grandfathered in right? ;D Jk I think its after 1982 now. So if your older than 30 your grandfathered in. I have heard you save on insurance if you take the course though.

Sean you can request a study pack to be sent to you through the ODNR boating section and you just read the book take the test and send it back. They grade it and send you the license for free if you pass; just got mine.

I got the packet on boating and read through it a couple times, but I have yet to take the test. I only have a 7.5 hp outboard right now so I don't need my license yet. My buddy is looking at new boats and he'll have at least a 60hp on his new boat so I'll definitely need to pass the test soon. It looks pretty straight forward and for the most part common sense.
