Hi all, Many of you know me from other sites I'm sure. I'm Brad Durick from Grand Forks, North Dakota "Home of the Red River of the North" I am very lucky to live up here and have the famous trophy channel cats that call the Red home right here. I also own and operate a catfish guide service, Brad Durick Outdoors LLC. It is a guide service that specializes in Red River channel cats but more importantly showing people how great catfishing can be. If you have any channel catfish questions please feel free to ask. Catfishing is my favorite subject. www.redrivercatfish.com

I heard those channels on the red river had mutated genes. Must be a cross between a blue and channel. LOL Just kidding. Looking forward to hearing some good tips in the future.

Actually that whole mutated gene thing has been flying around for years. In October of 2010 I collected 12 DNA samples and cataloged the fish with photos which the ND Game and Fish Department sent to Auburn University for testing to prove or disprove that. Of course it was not a high priority study so we have never heard back since but they say that will be completing it this year.

I honestly meant that as a joke, the only mutation or genetic diversity I have read of is with blue cats and channels. Didn't think there were blues cats out that way. More of a southern thing right? I have read in a few books that the areas along the east coast may have channel cat and blue catfish hybrids. It's a natural process and it wouldn't take much for it to happen in a river or blue stocked reservoir. I even read that they had genetically manufactured a hybrid blue/channel in a test lab. I'd like to get a few of those and put in a pond. Blues are kinda lazy fighters and not real aggressive eaters like the channels. It would be fun to land a blue sized fish with an attitude of a channel. That's an interesting study. I'd like to hear the results....if you're allowed to release them that is.

That's some neat stuff...I had also heard something about red river channels being mutated or hybridized a few years back... pretty neat it could soon be proved or disproved soon...can't wait to hear results if u decide to share them!

My guess and that of the biologist in charge of the river is that they are indeed channel cats.
1. 100% of the time they have the anal fin rays of a channel 2. They almost never get over 30 pounds 3. They just don't have that bluecat look about them

i fish rivers with both and have never seen anything cross yet,but i can tell ya theres a differance between the james river blues and potomac river blues, alot of the potomac blues have a hump on there back where the james blues doesnt, and the potomac blues are alot more aggresive,we just had this discussion last weekend at a tournament i fished and a few of the guys that fish both rivers for awhile will say the same thing
