If fishing from shore on a river or lake without allot of current. To check the depth put on a slip sinker and tie on a float at the end(float works as a sinker stop) Cast out and pull the bobber up tight against the sinker. Start letting line back out in one to two foot increments. Best way for this is measure the distance between your reel and first eyelet and pull the line out by hand. When the bobber comes back up that's the depth of that spot.(tip if that's the spot/depth you want cast out a 2nd rod to that spot) Pull sinker in another 3-6ft or more and repeat. This is a great way to find channels, drop offs, and structure from shore. If you know and can feel the structure (big rock or tree) check the depth and you will be able to use a slip float above it or cast right into it on bottom
