Hey, you guys still look acceptable atleast. Within about four months of meeting my girlfriend 5 years ago, I packed on over 40 pounds. Now I don't even want my picture taken anymore. I will be sitting down this year for picks with my big flatheads. Can't stand to see the massive belly ruining the pics! Lol!

A Fathom would be a nice addition to your really nice collection Kip. I hoping to pick up a few more.

Shimano makes some great reels, and the Charter Special is one of them. I wouldn't want to use them much above 20-25# of drag though. I can go into more detail if needed.I didn't do all that well casting the one I tried. Maybe it needed some tweeking. It's hard to find a lever drag that will put out that much in a catfish sized reel without failing. I can recommend some if you want.

What I have heard of this was trimming the fins would make the bait struggle more. I guess I could see this working. I know guys who do this. I haven't tried it myself. It's just my personal choice to try to keep the presentation as natural as possible. However, last year many times my bait would sit motionless for hours. If the same thing happens this year, I may pull out the fillet knife.

I bought some small circle hooks several years ago to use for smaller fish and never used them much. Last year while bait fishing I starting having issues with gut hooking several small drum. I had never had this issue in the past. So I tied on a small circle. It took me awhile to get use to not setting the hook. But after awhile I did fine. No more gut hooked bait, and I actually enjoyed it. Will be using them again this year when catching medium sized baits.

Good point Sean. But what I was referring to was the lines actual dry tested break strength, not its rated break strength.

A little additional info on knots. The same line with break at different percentages with different knots. With the Ande Monster Yellow I used some last year, the palomar has the highest break strength of the knots I tie. Like 108% of the lines dry break strength. Odd that a palomar knot makes the line test above its normal break strength. I have a link to a test on like 70 different lines with a couple different knots, if anyone is interested. Later, Chuck.

I used the cheap brass ones for years. Got a lot of them back out of snags all distorted. Broke a few of them using 50# mono. The crane and spro are both quality products I have used. Need to order some cranes from Dave.
