Got a 20+ flat last night about 9:30
About an hour later I found Wade's fish and caught it for him.
Best of all that one is a buckeye fan.

First flathead 41.
I worry you may have spoiled the guy. Instant success often multiplies the frustration we all know can happen with flathead.
I feel a bit better about my skills hearing that someone else has trouble gathering bait.

Sounds like you are getting flats that will cooperate. Good job!

After a month of skunks and small flats I finally had a good night. Fished with Bandit the flathead dog but he was no help. I suspect all the flathead turned on at the same time but no one else was fishing but me. Jet fleas and water skis made bait fishing difficult and I was out of bait at midnight and slept well in the cool evening.

Rod
You are living near what many of us feel is the best blue cat fishery. The lower James river holds so many trophy blues that us Ohio boyz drive there as often as we can afford.

Morgan Shimano TR200G is basically the same reel as the Charter Special. It has a start drag system and the TLD has lever drag. At roughly half the cost it makes an economical choice for a flathead reel. The amount of drag is not an issue for me because I fish 30# test line. I doubt that very few 2 piece rods would withstand much more drag. Casting these reels takes good settings for cast control and a little practice. I don't cast baits very far because I don't want to stun them with a big impact with water or a 2 oz sinker hitting them. Finding the "best" equipment for your style of fishing often takes time and experimentation.
