Only thing I have heard is about musky. I have heard some tall tales of some 50 inch musky from there....a 50 inch musky is like a 50 plus lb flathead. Show me or I dont beleive you. Other than that no idea.
Hope it turns out to be a good lake for you.

I love to catch fish. I have been trying to catch catfish in many ponds and lakes. debate I have been using have been cut up bream, and chicken liver. lately I have been fishing this late in North Carolina. the water is warm and while on my boat I've been seeing a lot of bubbles at the surface all around me. I have had a lot of luck with cut up brim at small ponds but form the lake I used dead oily shad from Walmart but I havent had any luck. what can I do. I would guess that the bubbles your seeing are turtles or gas being released from natural processes. .. decompoaition, etc. As far as cats go....it sounds like your on the right track. Brim, shad, and even night crawlers are good options for cats of all types. When it gets late in the year the water loses available oxygen in the deepest part of SOME lakes.....this is called the thermocline. In ohio the lake I fish the thermocline sets in at 13 feet. This means you wont see many fish below that 13 foot depth mark....so I typically dont fish deeper than 12 foot. Combine that with the fact that when it gets this hot cats feed primarily at night and you will start narrowing down spots and times to fish. Find where the thermicline sets in and start fishing there. If its 13 foot find a flat that is 12 foot and toss out baits. Each hour without action move shallower and try again. If you can find a shallow flat where the main river channel swings near by thats where id start my search. Good luck Sent from my SCH-I545 using proboards

Russ thats a heck of a gar. I only know of two caught in ohio thats been longer than your 50" gar. One on ogf a few years ago and the one Amanda got last year..... It was 53" and 15lbs. It definately makes you wonder how the state record 48" gar got to be 25lbs.
I guess the point of the post is to explain how uncommon a 50" gar is. Its definately a heck of an achievement to bust 50. Congrats.
Oh yeah and chuck theres your monster. Lol

I always believed moon phase has a lot to do with spawn. This year that does not seem to be the case here. Very few marked up fish so far. Water temps has been right around 77 to 80 for weeks now. I think it is close, and I know there is a few fish spawning right now. But fortunately I dont think the majority has yet here. Soon very very soon. Thats worth noting. Im not really sure what I beleive whether its water temps, moon phase, or a combination of the two. The only thing thats certain is that....there is no clear cut way to determine when the spawn occurs. Its only when you see a fish that shows evidence of spawning can you say for sure that they have started spawn. Another thing that I have learned is that if im not catching them. ..it doesn't mean that they are spawning. I used to think that but I have been wrong time and time again. my dad just called me and was walking along the edge of tappan and took some pics of one in spawning mode too. not quite as big. he guessed around 20lbs he said it was laying in a bunch of blue gill beds Just makes me wonder if spawn has more to do with moon phases and angle of the sun rather than water temps....one suggested theory. My reasoning is that during mushroom season you guys are 3 full weeks behind.....because of soil temps. It shouldnt be much different for water temps. Yet it seems that the flathead which are a hundred or two hundred miles north of us are spawning at the same time. Just something to ponder I guess. Thanks guys. Sent from my SCH-I545 using proboards

Amanda and I took the kayaks out to a local creek Tuesday evening. We met up with Russ and Wes and hit the water. We were targeting bass but the highlight of the evening came when we were dragging our kayaks up a riffle. Amanda, Russ, and Wes made it through the riffle and started paddling when I saw this. At first I told Russ that I had saw a 10-15 pound flathead sitting in the shallows. I could tell that it had some scars on its back, probably caused from spawning activity. I picked up the camera and started recording. As I got closer I quickly realized the flathead catfish was much larger than any 15 pounds. This fish was every bit of 40" long and in pretty rough shape. (I'm guessing it at a solid 30lbs.) It was sitting out of the current recovering from spawning. Given the water temperatures I assume this flathead will spawn several more times. He swam off after becoming famous, hopefully to make some more flathead babies for me to catch. lol

Those smaller nets are good when you need to throw out a ways to get to the shad. I have seen some guys throw them to the end of the rope with ease. Those 5 footers are hard to throw hard/far and get to open. I get most of my shad from a local lake with docks so I dont need the distance that a small net affords.
Just another aspect to consider. From there its about mesh size....but I wont get into that.
By the way....a good throw net will be the best investment youll ever make. I save myself hundreds of dollars each year.

Ferminted beans (all kinds of varieties...but most common seems to be milo beans) seem to be a big favorite for guys looking for eater size channels. I believe they put them in a container....50 gallon barrel or a 5 gallon bucker....fill it with beans and then with water. Add a lid and let it sit in the sun for a few days.
I beleive they take a coffee can or a plastic baseball bat with the top cut off to disperse their chum. They then make a punch bait with the ferminted beans and peanut butter.
Like I said this is for small channels.
Personally id just cut some bluegill into small pieces( or use a food processor) and toss them out where you wanna fish. And then put a big chunk of gill on.
Good luck.

Went out to Buckeye Lake saturday night and ended up getting on some bigger channels. Was a little slower night but ended up with 15 or so. Caught a 9lber being the biggest and most of the 15 were around 5lbs. All were fat females full of eggs. We were anchored in a channel with rocks on one side and docks on the other. Caught them on both sides closer to the banks. Fished a cpl spots but this is where we had most of out luck. Caught most on bluegill heads. Wasnt getting much activity on anything else. Ended up being a good night with a lot bigger fish than usual. Thats good to know. Thanks for the report. We fished rocky fork lake from 5pm till 2am. Only had one bite. We tried fishing wood at first....then moved to a shallow flat near some really deep water. We typically do well at that spot in the fall, but nothing was interested there either. I hate june. Sounds like it just needs grease......probably on the side with the handle. Id throw some oil on the levelwind gear and line pawl. Take the side plate off of the side with the handle. With a q tip or paper towel clean the old grease out and replace it with new stuff.
I like quantums hot sauce line up. ..both the oil and grease.
My guess is that it works fine...casts good, is still smooth, and has no other problems right?
