Medium heavy id guess. The medium is pretty weak for blues and flathead imo... and they only come in one size 7 foot.

Cant go wrong with abus. My advice is to look at the line capacity. The c3s and records may not let you run enough heavy mono for the big cats. You may wanna look at the bigget sized alphamars or the 7000s.
As for rod id say a medium heavy to heavy power is needed. Id personally go with a fast action. I like a little bend in the tip of my rod. It helps when running circle hooks.
There are many different ugly sticks and therefore many different types of power. A medium heavy catfish series ugly stick wont have near the power of a ugly stick custom in medium heavy. My advice on rods is to pick one up and play with it before you buy it.
My flathead set ups are abu 7000s and quantum big cat rods. My dream flathead set up would be an ugly stick custom and an alphamar....simply for the higher drag. With that set up you would be able to turn anything in freshwater.

Jordan it was 35lbs in a net so we subtracted 2lbs and gave me a little room to improve. 33lbs is my pb.
Ive been (seriously) catfishing for 7 or 8 years now. Each year I learn a little more and do a little better. This year has been very frustrating to say the least. I know what it takes to get bait, I know where fish should be, I know the best times to look for each specie, I know some of the best spots to fish, etc. And it wasnt until thia year when I began to doubt all of that.....maybe I dont know so much after all. Maybe I need some of what chucks sipping on. Lol
I just need a good night of cats to cheer me up thats all. I also wanted to check and make sure I wasnt doing something wrong. It seems the concensus is that getting bait sucks.....I agree.;D

How long do you spend on average getting bait for a trip? I spent 3.5 hours yesterday driving around the lake throwing a cast net for shad just to get 12 of them. 12 is what I felt we meedwd for three people. I was pretty exhausted but I had a good feeling about fishing last night....I was wrong. Now, I know gills tend to be easier to get but they are a pain in the butt to keep alive in a yak.
Anyway as I was driving home last night after another horrible trip.... I kept telling myself, "your stupid....your stupid. why do you spend 3 hours to get bait and sit out night after night without bites let alone a fish. I can grab my bass rods and be on and off the water in 5 hours and catch a dozen or so fish....and not lose sleep"
I honestly probably just need to vent, but after a dozen or so trips in the kayak for cats and ive only landed 2. I am begining to question my fishing prefrence. I may just have to start my own forum....panfishfreaks.....lmao;D

they love the rocks. especially at night. they hold the heat from the day and attract bait. i hope you catch him. he may not live there though. just be there to spawn. i would try to catch him before they start leavin the creeks and heading back for big water. i hope for your sake he lives there. and has a few buddies that hang around. looks like the water could support some big fish plus food supply seems to be there. same stretch the last one was in? A mile downstream....and he wont be leaving anytime soon. Hes trapped both upstream and downstream in a 3 mile stretch of skinny water. Id like to think someone has a shot at catching him in the fall. Sent from my SCH-I545 using proboards

"Flathead don't like rocks" Hey now.....in my personal experience flathead favor wood. I dont fish too many places where rocks average volkswaggon beetle size. Sent from my SCH-I545 using proboards

I saw another flattie recovering in a creek yesterday. This one was a GIANT.....water was too muddy to get a clear pic but I did watch him for a minute or so. Its amazing how large they can get in small water. The creek was in limestone contry so huge boulders and caves are present. That might attribute to some of its survival/growth. I havent seen anything near its size so I cant even fathom a guess. It looked like a real rod breaker though. I cant wait for August to roll around. I know ill just be disappointed if i target them right now.

The other day I went out to do some scouting on new water and I noticed a few limblines. This was a very remote and small...but deep. .. section of creek , so i was suprised to see limblines at all. It almost had to come from somone on the land. They were for the most part un tagged and old............ ....... so I removed them. Call it liter control. Lol. I had noticed that someone else had went through and flipped a few of them up into the tree limbs just to get them out of the water so it would be safe to paddle a kayak near the bank. How do you guys handle the situation. Cut them.....flip them.....remove them completely....or just go on by? Sent from my SCH-I545 using proboards

Looks like a male cat that has been or is getting ready to spawn. They tend to swell up and get dark during spawn.
