You have a good air supply Randy? If you have a lot of bait in a small tank, they will get over stressed and use more oxygen. Smallmouth are very sensitive compared to the other species of fish you mentioned. I imagine they are the first to die off.
Id start by looking at air supply and then look into getting a charcoal filter to remove amonia, scales, and other junk....frequent water changes help too.

The newer 6500s I had did have some tight clickers....thats why I traded them to jordan for the kalex 60s. I thought id run clickers from the yak, but I changed my mind. I have bent the metal clips in the 6000s before, and ended up tearing one up by bending it too much.
I have seen atleast 3 different clicker mechanisms in abus reels. Each will wear differently and offer different levels of noise and initial tension....not talking about tension by adjusting the brakes here. Buy a couple and see if you like them, if not you have learned a valuable lesson and will know in the future what you desire in a reel.
Best of luck fishstik

Heres what id try first...
If your in a pond or lake: take a loaf of bread and toss it out on the surface close to the bank and then wait for the carp and suckers to show up. Then toss a cast net out on them when they come to eat. Be careful because they will spook. Try to avoid casting shadows.
You may be able to chum corn/oats or even bird seed in a spot on moving water and then try to toss a cast net after a little while.
Only problem you will have is when you get a 20lber in the net. Good luck with that. ;D

Well I fished the last tournament of the year with our local club Saturday night. My partner caught a decent fish @ 27in. and I ended up with a 24in. dink. The bite was Slowwww to say the least. The good news for me is I ended up with the big fish of the year award from the last tournaments 1st place win!! Its an awesome plaque and for my second year of tournament fishing I was pretty pumped!! Congrats man. Tournaments offer a competitive spirit that only fuels our passion. Its very rewarding when all of your efforts pay off. Sent from my SCH-I545 using proboards

They have jet drive lower units you can buy for an outboard. If you could figure out how to interchange them yourself, you could have the best of both worlds. I saw Fishin' with Joe (from youtube) with a nice new Mercury outboard that he had a jet lower unit put on. He was fishing the Scioto with it and said he can go in 4-5inches of water and be fine. And if it was shallower he could build some speed and get through. I had thought of getting a jet boat and then buying a used prop outboard and interchanging them....but the boats that you use with jets arent suited well for big water. Id need a v bottom for the ohio river and a flat bottom for the Scioto. I guess id be dreaming if I had both. ;D Sent from my SCH-I545 using proboards

I cant lie that looks like a blast. Id like to take one out in the surf and ride a wave. Dont know about heading up the river with it though. Nothing like getting run over by your own boat. Lol

Dont you remember our trip with luckeywade? Lol I ran randys jet for a couple years and loved it but I really love my prop for big water. After my few trips with my boat this year im set on the prop. I feel theres bigger and more quality fish on the big water! That being said I feel a prop would suit the fishing you do best. yea I remember that day very well...my butt still hurts. When we cut across the 3 footers the last time I thought we were going down for sure. Randy is one brave man. I kinda set my mind on a prop already but I wanted to see if someone could convince me otherwise. To be honest I dont think I have the balls to run a jet up the scioto at summer pool anyway.....add darkness and fog in the late fall and it could get rough. Some of those stories you and randy told me were pretty bad too. Bobby that sounds about right. The water we have down here is as diverse as you can find in ohio. So im going yo have to sacrafice one or the other. Jet and go shallow and get beaten to death on the big water. Or go prop and leave the shallows for kayaks. Sent from my SCH-I545 using proboards

I agree kip, but the scale read 50 plus. Cant argue with that. He may be a tall dude.
Sorry guys but I dont have a big enough man crush to call any of you guys while the fish is still out of the water. ;D As awesome as it would be id have to get him back in the river.

Well im 8 months into my year internship at the plant and in January I will take over as superintendent. Which means 2 things....1 I will have a ton of responsibility, and 2 my salary will nearly triple. Im 24 with no monetary responsibilities so that means toys.... lots of toys ;D. This Spring I was looking at boat but decided to go with kayaks instead. Which has been a great experience. I have covered more water this year than I ever did in my jon boat. Kayaks are great but im not 100 percent sure I wanna do all my catfishing from them. Hard to sleep in a yak. they arent very comfortable for those 10 hour plus outings. So after some research I think I have a good idea of what kind of boat/ hull I want. Now my problem lies in the motor. Id like a jet to run some local skinny water but im not sure if id like it on the big water like the ohio river. Im really trying to weigh my options. Id like to hear what you guys think about jet motors vs. prop driven motors. Anyone have experience with tunnel hull prop boats? Im not real concerned with top speed to be honest. If I do 30mph im good. And don't worry Russ......you'll have a seat reserved. Sent from my SCH-I545 using proboards

How many of those guys that fish it know what they are doing......how many are tossing live gills? And how many are tossing livers, nightcralwers, etc? It just may be that they arent fished for in the right way.
Ill take one half that size in the yak.....and be perfectly happy. Well done.
Oh yeah.....should I be stocking up on extra greenies for this weeekend? My plans to catfish 2 nights. ...let me know if you wanna work something out. Ive got a few creeks to fish.....but id turn them down for the big river.

I honestly think running circle hooks from a yak will be fine Russ. Our jon boat wasnt much different than the yaks....when a rid started to load you could feel the boat move..... and it did fine. Fishstick If your anchored just make sure its a well placed anchor that will hold and circle hooks will load up fine. A good anchor is going to be key.
If your trolling id go with a circle hook only if your baits are being drug behind your yak. As Russ said the momentum will help drive the hook. If you get a big one you might go from foward at 1.5 mph to backward at 3mph. If your just dropping baits vertically id go with a j hook. For some reason I have had problems in our jon boat with using circle hooks in verticle presentations....the j hook seemed to help. The only way to know what works for you is to just get out and do it. Youll find what you prefer.
If your trolling youd do better to leave the reels engaged. Sent from my SCH-I545 using proboards
