There are a few In-Fisherman publications on the exact technique you are mentioning. I dont remember the names of them but if you search for them im sure you will find them. I read a few of them and was amazed at the amount of fish they were catching during the day. They targeted structure in 10 foot or more of water with a jig and a piece of cut bait. Muddier water allowed them to fish shallower because the cats used the structure to hide from the sun. They would "thump" the bait on the bottom causing commotion and enticing the flathead to bite. They would fish a peice of structure for 10 minutes and move to the next spot. I believe one guy mentioned using baby snapping turtles as bait. Never tried to do it though, I usually sit on a piece of structure drop my bait and wait. Good luck, and let us know if you have any luck.

I don't really target turtles I just catch them when fishing for catfish. I beleive the one i posted earlier was on a gama circle hook though. I beleive he swallowed the bait so any hook would have worked.

I saw the turtle town forum and I couldnt resist. Here is a 18 pounder I caught fishing a friends pond for channels. He was released unharmed in a local creek, he had quite a temper though. Attachments:

I was intrigued by this argument and I can see both sides of it. Just to mediate a little; all kinds of fish have been seen at one time or another as a nuisance native or not. I love flatheads, but they have had tremendous negative impacts on the quality of fisheries in rivers and lakes all over the continental United States. Maybe this is one thing that you two will have to agree to disagree on.
Thanks for the link mogadorecatz87, I learned something new today.

I tried using creek chubs a few times last year, but I dont like them because they die pretty quick when compared to blugills and bullheads. Another reason why I dont use them that much is becuase its hard to get really large ones. Every now and then I pull a 11" or 12" out of the creek but Ive never had much luck with them for flatheads. When they die they seem to produce alot of channel cats for my girlfriend.

Have you tried tightening the brake down a little. I use Abu 6500's and I sometimes fish pretty swift current in the spring. All i do is tighten the brake down and they work just fine, the fish dont seem to mind the extra tension.

Hello, my name is Sean Stone. I have been fishing pretty hardcore for the last 6 years. When I got my drivers license at the age of 16 I decided that I would devote the entirety of my free time to fishing. So while my high school friends were partying I went fishing, now I'm in college and things haven't changed. Last year i logged over 700 hours fishing, 400 of which were strictly spent flathead fishing, 150 carp fishing, the rest of the time was spent fishing for bass/Crappie/bait. I fish for any fish that will bite. Last year I entered 5 different species into the fish Ohio program under trophy catches, only 4 were needed for master angler status. (Bluegill, Crappie (White), Carp, Channel Catfish, and Flathead Catfish.) The white crappie also qualified for an In-Fisherman Master angler award. When I began fishing I lost a few friends, but since then I have gained even more. I'm happy to be apart of this forum and I look forward to sharing my insights and opinions with all of you. Thanks, Sean Stone

I catch hybrids all year long at the Dayton Power and Light power plant in Aberdeen, Ohio. One of my friend catches 5 pounders left and right on cut bait. My personal best is 2 and a half. Heres a little one I caught Jan. 5 this year. You can see the snow in the background. Actually went again this Saturday and caught 3 little ones just like it. It gives me something to do until the water warms up and keeps me sane. Attachments:

Have you tried that kit Papaw? I'm kinda hesitant to believe that such a kit exists. I have carried morels in potato sacks all through our woods and the morels still prefer certain areas over others. (Dead Elms, Tullip Poplars, etc.) You would assume that the seeds/spores would fall out and provide morels for the years to come, especially on the trails we use in between patches. I'm just curious to see if you had tried this kit?

I live in Adams County and we own a few hundred acres that are loaded with morels. Its pretty common to spend an hour or two and fill a bread bag of morels, as long as Im the first one to get to them that is. Last year 3 of us found 7 or 8 bread bags, which was a little under average. I think they came up late last year which made them a little harder to find under the may apples and such. Hopefully this year they come out early so I dont have to miss too much fishing.

With warming temperatures and early signs of spring, I figured that I would start a Morel Mushroom hunting thread. Last year I went a dozen or so times. I don't know if i wanna sacrifice that amount of time away from fishing this year or not. I'll let you know when i start finding them. Should be about mid April.

I have been doing some overwinter reading and the consensus amoung the so called experts is to use cut bait in the during the cold water periods in spring and fall for flatheads. They then switch to live baits during pre spawn and throughout the remainder of the summer. I like duckys explanation of flatheads and how they use smell more in muddy water, never really though to use cut bait when the waters stained. I will have to give that a shot.

I was just wondering how many people use floats for flatheads. I primarily use floats in lakes and use a bottom rig in streams and rivers where current is a factor. I know a lot of people who wont even touch a float, they fish on bottom or dont fish at all. What have you guys found to be successful?

I fish lakes for the most part. I am able to locate the fish easier in lakes than in rivers. I just look at the lakes map, drive around find some structure at the right depth and fish. Rivers are a little harder to read, I can find fish in creeks becuase i know where the current makes holes for the cats, then if the hole has structure i fish. The Ohio river for instance is constangly dredged for barges, lacks adequate structure, and is just too big to really key in on the fish. I guess you could fish wingdams, locks and dams, but everyone and thier brother does that already. I guess i feel more confident fishing lakes.
