I hook my bait in the mouth and out their nostril I dont go thru the bottom lip that way they can breath and they stay alive all nite long but you have to be careful when casting or you will throw it off

I will give it a try thank you guy's now with bully's the lip is very hard and the hook wont tear through on a hook set and may be in the way to keep the hook from fully penetrating the fish's mouth how do you rig live bully's in current and river's ?

Duck.....wont hooking them that way make them go backwards in the current and flush water over there gill;'s the wrong way and kill them? i just ask because some of my bait has died hooking them like this but maybe i was fishing to fast of water?

I hook Bullheads through the mouth also. There is still plenty of hook to hook up well!

I hook bullheads thru the lips with a 8/0-10/0 circle hook. No need to rip thru the flesh on a hookset. On the hook up it will rip itself off

I f i had to guess the baits you hooked that died you hooked too deep and hit the spine, you have to watch that or there dead. i have never had a proplem with baits in current hooked through the tail.

We fished a local creek the other day with live baits and every bait was hooked through the back. Every single bait that was casted in the middle of the creek, where the most current is, died within an hour or so. On the other hand all of the baits we tossed up close near snags stayed live and healthy. Whether or not the drowned is questionable. We chalked it up to coincidence.

I aint to smart on this but doesnt the mouth open n shut to make the gills open n close I just always thought if there mouth was held shut they couldnt breath hell I dont know lol

What your opinion on hooking through the mouth and out through the eye? Would this impose the hook from setting in to a cat, would it turn back into the bait on the hook set? Or so you think this would work? most place's i fish i must cast a bit further than a lob can reach so i have to give it a little more umpth to get it where i need it what do ya think?

yea I would say you could hook them out the eye socket and they would still live ok I have done this on chubs and gills but dont get into the brain

I'm not saying it's the right way, but beings I fish heavier current most of the time in the river, I hook the fish in the mouth out the eye socket. If I hook them near the tail, it kills them. I never have my baits die on the hook by hooking them the way I do. It is also a lot harder for a fish to rip them off the hook.
