Without a doubt. The knowledge of 50+ catfish experts (last time i checked) is hard to compete with. During winter, especially i get an itch that cannot be scratched. I try to fill that void with readings, however I have found that such readings only intensify the urge to fish.

Thanks, for the advice Papaw714. I spoke with kip earlier about such rods, and its just to far for me to travel for a rod. If it helps I am looking for a multi purpose rod, I fish from a boat and from the bank. However I rarely use circle hooks, therefore I need a pole to set the hook. I do not want a broom stick rod, there too heavy and sometimes I like to "Bass Fish" for flats. For most of the situations I use a 7/0 octopus hook. Hope this helps. I really appreciate the help.

Yea both the Ugly Stick Tiger and the Berkly Glow have stainless steel/oxide eyes. I'm also aware that ceramic guides work well with braid.

I have been looking for a new pole that I can use braided line with. I mentioned in the line thread that i use 30lb silverthread copolymer line. After seeing that alot of you guys are using much larger line, maybe you know something I don't. I have never lost a big fish and I definitely don't want to. So I am in need of some advice. I like the properties of Dacron braided line and this is probably what i will be spooling my 6500 ambassadeur with. I'll probably use 50lb test if that helps. Currently I am looking at a Berkly 9' glow stick and a Ugly stick tiger 7'. I really don't like the length of the Ugly stick tiger and thats my reason for this dilemma. Any advice?

I have had people tell me they were trash fish as well. I have never ate drum and I don't plan too. I kinda lump them into the carp category, in which some people eat them and others don't. I'd rather catch it again than eat it anyway. Here's a picture of a five pounder out of the Ohio river. My friend caught an eight pounder last year as well. They sure are fun to catch. Attachments:

From what I have read recently, there seems to be 3 ways to fish for catfish that would fit under "Bass fishing for Flatheads". The first way I mentioned above was the thumping method in which you add a large weight and vertically jig submerged structure. The second way to "Bass fish for Flatheads" is to use a float and live bait and slowly and methodically twitch it over and around structure. When I used to fish paylakes i had success with this method during sunrise and sunset periods. The idea is that when you twitch your bait it struggles harder to because it doesn't like being manipulated thus invoking bites. The third and last way to "Bass fish for Flatheads" is to simple tie on a deep diving crankbait or a large spoon and fish the main creek ledge where the flatheads will be holding.

I've been reading the Doug Stange , Life & Times in Catfish Country and the book is laid out in chronological order from oldest to youngest. Starting in 1984 when the first catfish article was published in a magazine. He speaks about catfishing as if it were a secret, virtually under fished and under-respected as a game fish. I guess we still face problems with respect among the fishing population.

I think I read that one as well from his website. I have tried to mimic the conditions he mentioned in the story, heck I even brought a tarp along. Only things I lacked was trying to lite a cigarette in the downpour and the nice flatheads of course.

I didn't realize that the book was published in the 1980's until I had finished reading it. The wording was similar to fishing articles today. Most of the terminal tackle such as sinkers, swivels, and floats are all relatively similar. The only exception I found is that hooks today differ greatly by style, size, and finish. Circles, Kahles, Octopus, and etc. are all relatively new to catfishing.

Sometimes things sound differently in my head than how they come out in words. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't offending anyone in any way shape or form. I understood your point above and I just wanted to clarify things a little.
