what is the actual number of fish they let go in dillon? I think I remember hearing the number 70,000......is that right? or am i way off........
anyway do you guys think that is too many for a 400 acre lake? I know they all wont make it to adulthood but I know too many can stunt their growth. I know the biologist know more than me, but is their intention to promote a trophy fishery, or just make sure there's a sustainable population?
I might be thinking ambitiously, but I hope to have the opportunity to catch 12-15lb bluecats in 5 years from now......I don't think that is too far fetched......and not too long after that have the chance at some 20lbers.......

I'm sure most everybody here already knows the ODNR stocked dillon last year with a bunch of 12" bluecats. Just wanted to address it on here to get everybody's opinion on this subject.
Myself, I am very excited and hope Dillon can support a trophy bluecat fishery without comprimising the world class flathead fishery just downstream from the Dillon dam.
Incase you guys didn't know, there are already some blues in the muskingum.........joey caught a 15lber last summer out of the z-ville pool. Although IMO that fish came up from the ohio river from WV efforts in restoring the bluecat population in the upper reaches of the Ohio River.
Anyway I could ramble on all night about this subject I wanna hear ya'll input...............whether you think this is a good or bad thing.........size predictions in coming years.......whatever tell me what you think

sweet flathead pic!!
the post above the pic I don't know if I can agree with, a good friend of mine catches more big fish than anyone I know and uses steel leaders. I don't use them, although I'm a firm beleiver that catfish are not the least bit line shy......

leader length does not matter when using circles, although I beleive it is important to snell a circle hook.....
when santee drift fishing it is common to use leaders up to 7' long.........usually around 4foot though..........i like to drag a a few rigs at different leader lengths to see what the fish might like better...........

i like that answer robby, there is no magic water temp, bait, or secrets to catchin flatheads.....there are techniques and methods that work better then others, yet what works today might not work tomorrow........
that's why I like to fish multiple days in a row for long periods of time......that's when you can really nail them down good and be on the fish.............especially when boat fishin.....
as far as water temp after winter I would say in the neighborhood of 50 is where they start moving around again.....I fished a lake in georgia for the last 4 years where the water temp never dropped below 40........and even then it was hard for me to target cold water flatheads, never caught a one under 50 degree.............heard of plenty and seen pictures from juggers of jumbo winter flatheads.........had a good buddy that jugged up a 50lber out of oconee in january........when he cleaned him found a dinner plate sized crappie in his stomach.............I don't know what the water temps in the river are like now, but as soon as it get's fishable i wanna be on it........fresh cut baits should be the ticket

i hear ya rollo, this is the longest i've gone without fishin' in a long time and i think it's affecting my state of mind.......looking forward to having a couple weeks off here in a week or so....
I don't care if it's just going to dillon to catch channelcats or getting out and catching bait..........might have to make a trip down south for a few days.....

that's a pretty interesting question........it would be hard to fish for flatheads without knowing forsure they are there............then again with alot of patience you might find some sweet secrets for yourself.......
my take on it is, if a lake is only 20 or so acres then it must only be a lil bitty creek backed up........which probably didn't hold flatheads...........so unless someone threw enough in there to start a breeding population I wouldn't waste my time. Think about the river/ creek running through the resovoir and if or if not flatheads would be native to that watershed........
just some of my thoughts, look forward to others input......

actually it has 10 rod holders, lol..........i usually fished 6-8 when i was in georgia........more then that and it can get a lil hairy......
yeah you're right rollo, i do love running around in my lil boat on the water............just wish it was a lil wider.........although i can usually bring couch cushions and can get pretty comfortable to take a late night nap......i don't like to miss that morning bite!!
I would like to plan a trip soon and spend a couple days on the river..........boat fishin/ and bank fishing/ camping........maybe get a couple boats involved........
