Most of these tourneys are for the lakes. I normally do pretty well in rivers fishing some of the same types of areas that you mentioned Captainbrad. Next tourney I fish I'll try to find some fish and then fish the same general area but just move to nearby deeper water and see how that works. I've caught all my best channels while flathead fishing with big live baits!
Yeah Massey you're right about that 1 deep whole at Buckeye. Some nights I've been there fishing with another 15 boats fishing the same marsh. Buckeye has a lot of walls where it's more rocks/sand bottom around them other than mud like the rest of the lake. We normally pull good numbers fishing the walls with floats, with an occasional 5-6 pounder but not the numbers of good fish that we need.
I've been drifting when I can this year and it's been working good as well. Learned a lot from you guys on here about drifting and I think I just need to perfect it a little more.
I know that pre-fishing and scouting out the lakes is a huge factor in these tourneys as well and with work, gas money, and other expenses it is tough to really learn a lake well before fishing it. It might take me a little while but I'll be competing at the top here soon enough!

Just started fishing some channel cat tourneys and I was looking for a little help. I don't have problems getting on good numbers of fish but I'm not getting into as many bigger ones. I've tried larger baits but that doesn't seem to help. I am contemplating whether or not it is better to just play it by numbers and figure the more I catch the better odds I'll have of having some nicer sized fish, or if I start getting on smaller fish if I should move. I know for flatheads I normally don't catch small ones and big ones in the same spot. Is it the same for the channel cats?
Next time out I plan on moving around more and using only larger baits and even some live baits and hoping to target ONLY larger channels and not small ones. Is this a good idea or should I just stick with catching them in high numbers?

Live bait for flatheads and cut bait for channels usually. Sometimes I use medium sized creek chubs for channels but normally cut bait. I've caught flatheads on cut bait but not as many. One night I caught 5 while using bluegill heads and leaches. Bring both and use both to see what works.
When bottom rigged I hook the live bait from the bottom side so they can swim naturally and not upside down. When bobber rigged I hook live bait from the top right below the dorsel fin. I also hook live baits in the snout sometimes so when you reel them in it's not ripping their gills off.
My normal rig is main line-sinker-bead-swivel-leader-hook. For drifting I use Santee rig with a peg float and sometimes use a blade with beads by the hook that Skyline mentioned to me.

Yea the late shift definitely causes some sleepless days Ducky. Especially during the rut. I'll get home at 2am and sleep for about 2 hours, wake up at 4am and drive to go hunt. Then hunt until I have to go back to work. I got a buddy who works late too and I'll have to convince him to head out with me after work a few nights.

Thanks for the input guys. Next week I'll be hitting the river after work a few times and we'll see what I can get into.

Any of you guys do any good from 2am or so until the early morning? It seems like I normally get my best bite from dark until 1am or so. I work late nights and get off at 1am and have went to the river before after work and never really had much luck. I know that any time on the river is better than on the couch so that's why I still go out after work during the week sometimes, but do you guys think fishing at this time of night is worth it.
Also, do you have better luck during different times of the night during different times of the year? It's still early and not really really hot yet so the early night might be better now but late night better in the hot summer days. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I live in the Columbus area and mainly fish the Scioto around here and south of Columbus so if anybody else gets out and fishes late night and wants to meet up sometime let me know and we can meet up.

Good Luck! Hopefully you can get on some nice ones. Sometimes it only takes 1 fish to win it.

I've had quite a few cars that I have bought and sold in the past 5 years or so and I had one that I broke the key off in. I used the other half of the key and it worked. Used it like that and sold it like that.
Blew up the motor to our new pontoon boat saturday that sucks. Don't want it to just sit so I'm looking for a new one asap which is just more and more $$$.

Nice to get the first one out of the way! I need to get on the river but it's been blown out. I know a spot where a creek comes in that is fishable when the water is a little high and I'll be heading there soon!

I mainly use 6500's because of the waters I mainly fish. It all depends on what you target and the size of the fish in those waters. It's hard to find an all-round setup.
