I would have liked to caught a flathead or a large channel, but for as early as it is I was happy. The trout were really going crazy, a guy came by in a bass boat and said he had caught 7 or 8 on a large crankbait. Next time I'll hook a trout up and use him for bait.

Yeah I live in Adams County, Ohio. Which shares a border with the Ohio River. The picture is of a 13lb blue, its a baby but I felt it showed how serious I can get. My girlfriend pulled in a 30lb blue last year from the same spot. Just got a boat last year so we haven't spent any time fishing for blues, but its definitely on the to do list. Attachments:

Nice fish guys. Looks like you had a good time. Where are the smiles at Kip? If I caught fish half that size I would smile ear to ear.

I have been doing a little early season scouting for new spots this year. I have found a few lakes within an hour and a half drive from my house. Some of which are large 2,000 acres and others that aren't so large (25 acres). Some of the smaller lakes are under fished and possibly not fished at all for catfish. Do I risk the chance of fishing small lakes with limited populations of flatheads and hope there is a large one lurking? I guess the real question I have is, Do I overlook the small lakes and fish the larger lakes? If so at what size do I call a lake too small, 10 acres, 50 acres, 250 acres? Another possible question would be, whats the smallest body of water that will allow a flathead to grow to maximum potential size? I have read tracking studies that have shown that flatheads seldom move over 200 yards from their primary dens/homes. If this were the case a flathead wouldn't need more than 10 acres. (A complete guess without doing math.) Given the best case scenario, plenty of food and structure, what do you guys think? I'm not looking for anything scientific just opinions based on experience. Scientific data doesn't hurt though.

Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely send Dave an order and stock up before spring really sets in.

Thanks, this is what I had thought. Dreadnaught what you said about them being good in the area where we catch them, is very true. We never have any luck with them any where else. They also seem to break down and get soggy after you freeze them, so it dosen't do any good to keep them.

I arrived at the lake 10:30am Saturday morning, the water temperature was around 48 degrees. The water temperature was 58 degrees by the time I decided to leave at 6:30pm. I fished nightcrawler under a float about 12' deep near a fallen tree with one pole and bluegill head and nightcrawler on the other, which sat in about 25' of water at the top of the fallen tree. I didn't manage a flathead but I caught a little channel, 6 trout (which had seemed to carry over from last year since the lake hasn't been stocked this year yet), 6 largemouth bass, and 7 bluegill. (One of which was sacrificed.) I was glad to get out and get some lines wet, it won't be too much longer before spring is in full swing.

I saw an illustration in a book that showed a saltwater rig that attached a heavy sinker to the line with a sinker slide/fish finder. I was thinking about buying a few, but wanted some reviews first. My use for them would be to attach large bank sinkers to my line, it seems that a lot of my bank sinkers aren't exactly smooth inside the eye which cuts my line. My friend actually quit using them after loosing a couple fish. Attachments:

Nice set up man. You have enough rod holders for 4 people in Ohio. ;D Nice fish as well.

In fact some of us are still relatively new to catfishing ourselves. Good to have you with us.

I'm going to head out to do a little flathead fishing Saturday in a local lake. Last I checked the water temp was in the upper 40's, I know thats still a little cold, but I'll try it all the same. Last year I lost one while jigging a nightcrawler under a float near submerged timber about this time of year. I was using 6lb test in hopes of catching some nice bluegills, my mistake. I am going to head out to the same spot and give it a try with heavier tackle. Obviously I'll use nightcrawler on a float again, but what should I use on my second pole? Cut bait or worms? Float or on Bottom?

Under the Rods and Reels sections in this forum alot of the guys give their favorite choices for each. You could try looking there.
It really depends on what kind of fishing your talking about. In my opinion, if you want to catch channel cats use a abu garcia ambasaduer 6000/6500 spooled with 20lb big game paired with a catfish ugly stick. I have found this set up to be one of the best all around set ups. I have seen these reels for lefties so I know there out there. If you wanna target blues or flats move up to a abu garcia 7000 spooled with heavier line and get a beefier pole. Alot of guys on here like the omotto reels as well, they seem to run a little cheaper. Again if you let us know what your targeting we could tailor to those needs.

Maybe someone can help me with this? I have been fishing the warm water discharge in Aberdeen Ohio for quite some time. It seems like everybody I talk to says they like to go catch skipjack there. For a while I thought I had misidentified the fish I were catching as mooneye, when they should have been called skipjack. However after doing some research i found that the fish I catch for bait are actually mooneye. Is it possible that hundreds of people are misidentifying mooneye as skipjack. Below is a picture of a few of the larger ones we caught for bait. Using Papaws link, what do you think? Mooneye or skipjack? Attachments:
